Shaolin Monks from China at Cleveland Asian Festival

Cleveland, OH – While the Cleveland Asian Festival is centered in Cleveland’s AsiaTown neighborhood (at 27th and Payne) the grass root, pioneer organizers have always strived to include national and even international performers and attractions.  The 10th annual Cleveland Asian Festival will feature a special international group.

Master Zhang Shijie, Headmaster of the Shaolin Huiguang Martial Arts Major Institute in Henan, China, will bring a team of 6 champion martial artists to teach and perform on Saturday May 18th at the Cleveland Asian Festival.

Henan, China is home of the Shaolin Temple and Shaolin Gong Fu (Kung Fu). Believed to have been founded in the 5th century CE, the Shaolin Temple is the main temple of the Shaolin school of Buddhism to this day. The Shaolin Monastery and its Pagoda Forest were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 as part of the “Historic Monuments of Dengfeng.”

Master Zhang and his team are all National & International Champions and have performed all over the world. They are of the highest caliber of Martial Artists.

They will be performing Traditional Shaolin Gong Fu showcasing various fighting routines, weaponry and martial athletic skills that have been passed down in the traditions of the famous Shaolin Temple for hundreds of years.   Attendees will learn about Forms, Weapons and Shuai jiao, the ancient jacket wrestling wushu style of China.

Johnny Wu, one of three CAF founders, is an inductee of two Martial Arts Hall of Fames.  He says, “Having Master Zhang and his team of international champions at the Cleveland Asian Festival is a tremendous opportunity for attendees to see the best in the world right her in their own backyard – and for free.”

A special, once in a lifetime workshop has been planned at 6pm right after the performances at the Festival. The workshop will be held at the Shaolin Kung Fu Institute Willoughby Hills, 28142 Chardon Rd, 44092. Tickets are $50 to participate in the seminar or $5 for spectators just to watch. The Cleveland Asian Festival is an annual celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage month in May in Cleveland’s AsiaTown neighborhood. The Cleveland Asian Festival is a landmark undertaking to unite the community through collaboration and recognition of its culture, diversity, and people.

The 10th annual Cleveland Asian Festival will be held May 18 and 19, 2019 from 11am to 7pm on Payne Ave. between E. 30th St & E. 27th S.  Admission and parking are free.
